Indian Railways is an organization operated by Ministry of Railways. It has world fourth-largest network, having nearly 1.2 lakh km of track length. Indian Railways is the single largest employer in the world. Indian Railways runs near about 12,000 trains daily to carry over 23 million passengers every day. It also operates more than 7,500 freight trains daily. It connects more than 7,000 railway stations.
Indian Railways is divided into 17 different zones from north to south and east to west.
Before Independence
The first passenger train in India operated by the Great Indian Peninsula Railway started its journey from Boree Bunder to Thana in Mumbai on 16th August 1853. It covered a distance of 34 km and carried near about 400 Passengers.
The main Purpose of the British Government to build the railway network in India is to make the transportation of raw material and resources easier from one part of the country to another. In 1880, Railway network in India expanded up to 14,000 km
After Independence
In 1947, there were 42 rail systems operating in India, but in 1951 these systems were nationalized and a single railway system is formed which is known by the Indian Railways. Indian Railways increasing its potential to carry passengers to their destination. At Present Indian railways operate nearly 50% of electrified trains.
There is a lot of hurdle in operating trains like climate challenge, unnecessary chain pulling, and unmanned level crossings. Indian Railway still serving the nation with honesty and making the nation proud of its working efficiency and capacities.
Indian Railways transforming its facilities and upgrading its trains to improve the time duration of travel. Indian Railway introducing new technology trains like Bullet train, Semi-Bullet trains and electromagnetic trains like Hyperloop.
India’s 1st Railway University in Vadodara running various courses this year 2018. It is an important step to develop new technologies in the field of railways.
